Why can Napoleon maintain his power in Animal Farm????

Power is kept by Napoleon through a number of methods. The most important in my point of view are the dogs. This is mainly because of how big and strong the dogs are. All the animals are scared of them which which helps Napoleon as he controls them. So he uses fear to control and lead the animals. This is demonstrated when he kicks Snowball out of the farm using the power of the dogs.”Napoleon stood up and casting a peculiar sidelong look at Snowball, he he uttered a high pitched whimper of a kind no-one had ever seen before. At this there was a terrible baying sound and nine enormous dogs came bounding into the barn, they dashed straight for Snowball”. This proves that the main power of Napoleons leadership is fear.

Another reason why Napoleon can maintain his power is the fact that he can read and write. This gives him an advantage over the other animals. He can tell the something and even though it is wrong they will believe it as they not as well educated as the pigs. “as for the pigs they could already read and write perfectly”. This proves how advanced the pigs were compared to the other animals. It shows that a true leader knows how to use his brain. He converts this to well rounded speeches which are “to the point”. This relates to real life when leaders of countries use aggressive speeches to convince the country to do something such as Hitler in WW2.

One of the most effective ways of controlling the farm is “Squealer” he is probably the most dangerous animal on the farm, not because of his strength but because of his verbal ability. he can convince anyone on the farm to do anything he wants them to do. This is proved when Squealer convinces the animals that Snowball has left the farm to join Pinch field farm. “Comrades, a most terrible thing has been discovered, Snowball has been plotting an attack against us from Pinch field Farm”. This makes everyone doubts of Snowball being a traitor and that Napoleon should be the rightful leader. That’s why Squealer is a dangerous asset to the leadership of the farm. This controls the animals by making them doubt whatever they think and think whatever Squealer is making them think which is mainly to benefit Napoleon and the pigs so the pigs can control the farm. The effects of squealers rhetorical devices are really strong as him and him alone has the power to persuade pretty much anyone to believe or do anything and as he works for Napoleon this means that Napoleon basically has the power to make anyone do anything. This is demonstrated when squealer announces “I warn every every animal on this farm to keep his eyes very wide open. For we have reason to believe that some of Snowballs secret agents are lurking among us!” This makes the animals really suspicious of other animals and makes them keep themselves to themselves therefore making everyone focus more on the work than chatting and arguing with each other. The only reason that Squealer works for Napoleon is because of the dogs and without the dogs Squealer could have probably done all this for himself. So without the dogs Napoleon wont have as much power as he has.

Napoleon keeps his power through the factor of intimidation. Napoleon was an aggressive leader and uses all of the farms resources to his pleasure.
This is shown when Napoleon ordered the animal residents to confess. “They added that snowball had privately admitted to being Mr Jones secret agent for years past. When they had finished their confession the dogs promptly tore their throats out.” The verb tore creates fear among the animals as how would you feel if someone TORE something out of a persons body right in front of you. The other animals would think that they would not want to get the same kind of treatment so they will be more fearful and focus more on their work. This also suggests that Napoleons intimidation is built up by the dogs. This makes the animals feel a constant pleasure to make Napoleons command into reality. On the other hand it could cause an uproar or kick start a rebellion. We can relate to this in the modern world when Hitler took control of Germany. Hitler’s reputation was built upon his intimidating personality.

George Orwell is my last but not least reason for Napoleon still maintaining his power over the animals in the farm. This is because he is the author and make anyone do anything in his book. So in this case he decided that Napoleon should be the name of the animal that should rule over animal farm. He also describes Napoleon as a ruthless but clever and manipulative ruler. This is proved in the quote “Napoleon’s can only be ascribed to his blatant lust for power. The very first description of Napoleon presents him as a “fierce-looking” boar “with a reputation for getting his own way. This shows how Napoleon is known in George Orwell’s book the animal farm as the animal who took over the farm and led the animals into working and making food even better than the farm owner themselves. You is related in the real world how all the government and the powerful people in this country rule over the normal citizens and treat. This is because of how Napoleon takes control of all the people with his fellow pigs and how David Cameron takes control of England with his Mp’s.

    1) Try and explore alternative interpretations for your pieces of evidence and try to explore the different possible feelings that these methods would create for the animals.

    2) Explore in detail the effects of the rhetorical devices that Sqealer uses to persuade the animals.

    3) Where have you seen these rhetorical devices used in the real world? Think about politicians and advertisements.

  2. Well done Mohamed, you’ve shown an excellent understanding of the effect of the tactics that Napoleon uses.
