What are the main events and characters that most influence the power dynamics in the group in Lord of the Flies?
To begin with one of the really important characters who influenced the power dynamics of the group in lord of the flies is Jack. Without him first of all the group of savages would have ceased to exist meaning Piggy and Simon would never have died but because of the perfidiousness of Jack it had caused a big commotion and has led to a big war inside the island. Another thing which helped jack a lot with taking over the island is his unencumbered behaviour because if he had responsibilities and cares he would never had decided to attack Ralph on multiple occasions as he would have worried what the consequences would have been and would never have done anything bad to harm anyone but since he had no responsibilities he decided to go on a rampage and go against the chief Ralph. jack thought he was a bellwether leader but in truth people only joined his tribe because they were scared what he would as he rules with which i wont say is the best way but certainly not least effective. “The chief said we got to challenge everyone.” This is coming from one of jacks members to his second in command ROGER.This shows how much Jack controls the group and how hes become more demanding and adept it also shows how insecure hell feel with people from Ralphs group. All this began with his resentment for Ralph and his cupidity for power. jack also thinks he is a big man going around gasconading about his hunting abilities and all the pigs he has killed to attract more people to his “group” which in truth is a savage tribe.
My next important character is Roger. He influenced the dynamics of the group in a very important way. His name means spear man in German this should give you a clue about what type of person he is, but if you don’t get the hint he is an aggressive person who wants to be able to do what he wants and isn’t that afraid to do things.Roger represents the sadist, the individual who enjoys hurting others. His evil motives are different from Jack’s, who pursues leadership and stature and enjoys the thrill of the hunt. Roger just likes to hurt people. He is described in Chapter 1 as a boy “who kept to himself with avoidance and secrecy.” His secret is that he is, in some ways, more evil than even Jack. We dont know what Roger did before he arrived at the island but it seems like his parents were very strict because as soon as he senses the chance to be irresponsible he jumps at the opportunity making me think that maybe he didn’t experience all the freedom a normal child would have had at a young age. This is why I think that Roger throws rocks at the unsuspecting littlun, Henry, but he throws them so that they miss, surrounded as Henry is by “the protection of parents and school and policeman and the law. His arm is essentially being held back by civilisation because if no one told him what was wrong he probably would have finished life by now. At the end of chapter 11, Roger pushes Jack aside to descend on the bound twins “as one who wielded a nameless authority.” This proves that even though Jack is the main leader Roger is one who everybody is scared of and will do anything just to get out of his way. So even though Jack is the main man Roger will always be the one to make everything tick like an architect to a director.
The death of Piggy also held a significant part in the dynamics of the group. This is because Piggy was a main and important character through the whole book and he was one of the main reasons why Jack decided to begin his own group but that’s not how he changed the power dynamics in the group. Well it was but there was a more significant way. Piggy as a character represented the morally right thing to do when he died all clear thinking went down the drain and they lost all hope to come to an agreement with Jack. Piggy represents the rational world. By frequently quoting his aunt, he also provides the only female voice. This is shown proved in the statement “my auntie told me not to run in account of my asthma.” This one statement alone gives us the idea that probably throughout Piggys life he has held on his aunts word and hasn’t done any any thing to backstab her words. This quote also tells us that he was mainly one to listen and counsel and that’s why he soon became kind of like Ralph’s advisor and not a leader as he lacks leaderistic qualities.
From my perspective the impact that the conch breaking has on the group is the most influential on its power dynamics. It was the most important event in the book because as soon as the conch broke at that exact moment all law and order which the conch represented was shattered into a million tiny pieces. “The conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist.” This is a quote taken from the book from page 200 were the conch is finally broken and where any last hope of law and order disappears. The quote also has a bit of imagery because it gives us a perfect scenario to imagine in our heads but also I think there’s a bit of exaggeration because I highly doubt it broke into 1000 pieces. The word ceased is very important in this quote because it emphasise on the fact that all the conch represents just disappeared. The conch has been very important throughout the book showing us that it is only right to agree with each other and to decide what is best. the quote shows that the boys (the savages) have no moral thinking as they destroyed in my opinion the most important item in the book. This quote creates the feeling that there will never be any law or order in the island and that the savages will continue to rule. The conch was a cynosure to all the kids in the island and the literal meaning is to guide them towards the rightful behaviour of humans. The metaphorical meaning is to guide the kids towards the bright light.
